The following categories are available:
Elizabeth Chadwick
- Some of the best researched and most entertaining historical fiction
available today.
Dorothy Dunnett -
House of Niccolo Series: A wonderful series that tracks the
trials and tribulations of the brilliant Renaissance merchant-banker,
Nicholas de Fleury.
Dorothy Dunnett - The Lymond Chronicles:
One of the best historical fiction series I have ever read! If you
like historical fiction, this is a keeper.
For more on Dorothy Dunnett, see: The
Dorothy Dunnett Companion - Elspeth Morrison
Susannah Kearsley - Mariana
Robin Maxwell - The
Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn: Queen Elizabeth I is given the
diary of her mother, Anne Boleyn, and boy-oh-boy is it ever juicy!
Even though we'll never really know what the Virgin Queen
was thinking, in this "what might have been fantasy" we
can sure imagine. Especially when Liz tries out some of her mother's
famous techniques on childhood friend (and hopeful lover) Robin
Dudley. Definitely a fun read.
Sharon Kay Penman: The best historical fiction
writer of all time.
- The
Sunne in Splendour: The Sunne in Splendor by Sharon
K. Penman, is one of the best books I have ever read. Never before,
or since, has such a talented writer taken up the cause of Richard
III. The Richard
III Society of America includes an extensive review of this
book on their Web site. If you love history (or even if you don't),
this book is simply not to be missed.
- Here
Be Dragons: Here Be Dragons by Sharon K. Penman, thoroughly
examines the relationship between "bad" king John (of Magna Carta
infamy) and his illegitimate daughter Johanna, who he weds to
Llewelyn, prince of Wales, and later his enemy. Johanna is torn
between the father who has been kind to her and the husband she
comes to love. Though the historical accuracy is amazing, under
no circumstances are these the lifeless characters of a history
book. By the time you finish, you will know these people better
than most of your friends (and like them better too). Part of
a trilogy that includes "Falls the Shadow" and "The Reckoning."
- Falls
the Shadow: Falls the Shadow continues the saga begun
in Here Be Dragons. The story focuses on John's son Henry
III, his youngest daughter Eleanor, and her husband, Simon de
Montfort, who ultimately becomes Henry III's sworn enemy. Once
again Sharon K. Penman produces unmatched historical accuracy,
intensly drawn scenes, and believable characters.
- The
Reckoning: Sharon K. Penman ends the saga with The Reckoning,
the story of Llewellyn the Last, grandson of Llewelyn the Great,
who married King John's daughter Johanna in Here Be Dragons
and Ellen, daughter of Simon de Montfort. Once you have read this
series, you will probably feel the inexplicable urge to make a
trip to Wales to search for remainders of these fascinating people.
Though they really did exist, Sharon Penman brings them to life
again for a new generation.
- When
Christ and his Saints Slept: Sharon K. Penman tells the story
of the Empress Matilda, daughter of Henry I. A fascinating look
at a magnificent woman who was forced to fight for her inheritance
after her cousin Stephen usurped the crown.
- Time
and Chance: Coming Soon! (We can hardly wait.)
- The
Queen's Man: The first of Sharon K Penman's medieval mysteries
featuring fictional hero Justin de Quincy.
Irene Radford
Phil Rickman
Scary stuff kids!
Josephine Tey - The
Daughter of Time: Sure of your sources? After reading this wonderful
mystery, you'll be double checking like crazy. A fascinating vindication
of Richard the Third. Shakespeare could have used some of Josephine
Tey's source checking advice!
