Geoffrey Richardson, in memoriam...

To the great sadness of many, Geoffrey Richardson, who worked hard to bring this website into existence, died on May 8, 2003.

While Geoffrey may not be here to enjoy the fruits of his labour, his website will remain, as will the love and affection of those he left behind.

We would be very pleased if you would like to read or share memories of Geoffrey.

RICHARD III IN YORKSHIRE

Why another website for Richard III? For the simple reason that we feel some other organisations operating sites on the w.w.w seem to lack enthusiasm about the principle purpose we believe such sites should have in common, namely:

The total vindication of Richard III from the general vilification he has suffered from Tudor and following propagandists and, in particular, the ridiculous charge that he murdered his brother's sons.

Why then a Yorkshire website for Richard III?

A variety of reasons:

  1. Yorkshire was undoubtedly Richard's favourite part of England, and York his favourite city.
  2. Although he was born in Fotheringhay Castle on October 2nd, 1452, he was brought up in the service of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, at Middleham Castle in North Yorkshire and it was undoubtedly here that he first met Anne Neville, whom he would marry and make his Queen at their joint Coronation on July 6th, 1483.
  3. After the Yorkist victories at Barnet and Tewkesbury [1471] established the rule of the House of Plantagenet of York in England, Richard was sent back to Yorkshire by his brother Edward IV effectively as Lord of the North, where he ruled as his brother's Viceroy and chief commander against the regular depredations of the Scots. His main base was Middleham and from here he repeatedly defeated the Scottish raiding Armies.

INTERNATIONAL INPUT

Although this website is controlled in Yorkshire, there has been - and will continue to be - ongoing input from interested correspondents in all parts of the United Kingdom and much further afield: in U.S.A., Australia, and any country where there is real interest in the life and times of Richard III.

REGULAR CHANGES OF CONTENT

It is our aim to update this site constantly, particularly in terms of pictures, illustrating what we regard as England's most beautiful county, and in news items on developments in appropriate fields.
