A Virtual Tour of Towton Battlefield

by Geoffrey Richardson

This is Towton Field where on Palm Sunday, 1461 more than 70,000 men fought the greatest battle ever seen in England. This is the story of that battle in words and pictures. Hear the spoken intro!

I am standing on the extreme right of the Lancastrian line, with my back to Bloody Meadow, which we will return to later in the story.

Here I am pointing to the Battle Monument, which you can see at the end of the cart-track. This crude roadway marks the rear of the Lancastrian line …

…and continues across the road and the field beyond for another thousand yards, till it meets the Ferrybridge road on the other side, just below the near horizon.
